Airplay Wittering does London

Youngsters from Airplay at RAF Wittering took part in a trip to the capital during the summer break. In this guest blog, 17-year-old James tells us about their adventures.

On the last week of the summer holidays 20 of us young people and five members of staff went on a three-day residential to London to stay on board the HMS Belfast.

We started off by leaving Wittering at 8am and were all set to catch the train from Peterborough. Once we were on the train it was around a two-hour train ride down to London. We had a short walk from the station to the ship, we then unloaded our bags and made our way to Green park.

We went via the underground, which we would use a lot throughout our time there. At Green park we had a picnic under trees. After we had finished our lunch, we were fortunate enough to receive a tour of Buckingham palace.

It was a surreal experience. From the long but enjoyable tour we were all very tired and as the weather was boiling, we were looking for something to cool us off.

This was when we went on a boat ride which gave us a chance for a rest while seeing the sights of London. The finale of the day was ordering Domino’s pizza and eating it by the light of the Tower bridge by the side of the Thames.

The atmosphere was great.

Next day we were up early and had breakfast which was a range of cereals and toast. After that we were onto the underground again to visit the RAF Benevolent fund.

We received a talk about how they help communities surrounding the RAF and how they help service personnel and their families. We enjoyed the biscuits too.

We then went back on the tube (It was much busier this time, but we were becoming experts at London travel) and stopped for lunch at Victoria food court, where there was a large variety of foods to choose from.

It was then straight to see Wicked, which was one of the best shows I’ve seen. We then went to look around M&M world, Trafalgar Square and so many other places, then we went back to the Ship for our final night. We played Uno and Battleship before falling into bed.

In the morning after breakfast we had a tour around HMS Belfast, we ten went to the top of the Sky Garden and after patiently waiting for around 45 minutes we made it to the top. The view was excellent. Afterwards we had to catch the train back to Peterborough.

Everyone was tired and I slept the whole way home. The whole trip was a brilliant. We got to experience London, visiting places that we may not have got a chance to, ordinarily. I am lucky enough to have been on so many residentials and trips with Airplay over the years.

I have been attending Airplays at different RAF stations since I was eight and have thoroughly enjoyed my time. I hope to volunteer in the future.
