Couple's year-long fundraising mission to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund

Kevin and Amie Ogilvie are raising money for the RAF Benevolent Fund throughout 2014 as way of saying thank you for the support we gave them after Kevin was seriously injured in an explosion in Afghanistan. Here the couple tell us more.

Kevin on his time serving in the RAF

I joined the RAF Regiment in May 2008 as a trainee gunner and from 2010 I was based at RAF Lossiemouth.

Kevin and Amie Ogilvie and their daughterI was deployed to Afghanistan for the second time in April 2012 as a Lance Corporal, and I was injured in September that year. I was the driver of a vehicle which ran over an IED, which resulted in me becoming paralysed from the chest down.

After my accident my wife Amie left her job as a support worker for adults with learning disabilities due to us moving away from where we were based whilst I was in hospital.

Amie and I met when I was on a course at RAF Honnington and we got engaged in July 2012 and married in September 2013. The wedding became our focus after the accident to ensure I was recovered enough for it to still go ahead.

Following my accident, the RAF Benevolent fund provided us with financial support to ensure Amie and our daughter (who was just six months old at the time) could stay with me during my recovery. They paid for us to spend four months in a cottage in Oswestry only ten minutes from the spinal unit. They also paid for my parents to come down from Scotland to visit us every other week, meaning we had family support. Without that support they just couldn't have visited so often.

Amie on the fundraising activities she and Kevin are doing to support the RAF Benevolent Fund

Without the help from the RAF Benevolent Fund, I would not have been able to stay with Kev at the spinal unit. For Kev, having our daughter and me with him every day helped keep up his motivation and determination going through his recovery.

Following the support we received, Kev and I decided we would set ourselves a challenge of raising £10,000 throughout 2014 to be split between the RAF Benevolent Fund and SSAFA, the two charities that have provided us with support since Kev's accident.

We have managed to gain the support and help of family and friends for our challenge and have many events taking place throughout the country during this year.

When we told our family and friends about our challenge they were all really keen to step up and take part.

We have several family and friends doing sponsored events, collections and also dress up/down days on our behalf which we are extremely appreciative of.

The first big event of the year for us was our bucket collection at Bury St Edmunds, Asda where we collected £884 over the course of the day which really set off our total.

Kev's brother Ali also did two bungee jumps over two days. So far he's raised over  £3,000 in sponsorship.

The event we are most excited about this year is our Midsummer Ball, taking place at Hotel Victoria in Lowestoft. We have organised a three-course meal with entertainment from the band Untouchable and Stephen Ward. There will also be a charity auction, which includes items such as a signed Manchester United shirt, a stadium tour of Liverpool's Anfield Stadium, tickets to see Lee Evans and lots more. Plus we'll be having a raffle with over 30 prizes so it's set to be an excellent night.
