East Renfrewshire MP takes on marathon for charity

East Renfrewshire MP Jim Murphy, Shadow Secretary of State for International Development, has been clocking up hundreds of miles running around his constituency whilst preparing to run the Edinburgh marathon for the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.

And he recently saw first hand how the RAF Benevolent Fund, the RAF's leading welfare charity, has helped one of his own constituents in Clarkton.

Jim Murphy MPTo fit training into his busy schedule, Mr. Murphy, who has two young children, can often be seen pounding the streets of his constituency in the wee small hours.  But one afternoon he popped in to visit Joyce Cunningham, an RAF widow who has been helped by the RAF Benevolent Fund for over forty years, since she lost her husband.

Mr. Murphy, who was Shadow Defence Secretary for three years, said:  "The RAF Benevolent Fund is a great organisation.  They help so many people and families who have served our country. I am delighted to be running the Edinburgh marathon for them."

Joyce Cunningham, who lives in an RAF Benevolent Fund housing property in Clarkton said:  "I was just 26 when I lost my husband, whilst he was serving out in Cyprus, but for over forty years the RAF Benevolent Fund have helped me lead an independent life and allowed me to support my son David, who was just two when he lost his dad.

"It is a huge comfort to know that the RAF Benevolent Fund is there for me, and will be, in years to come."

The RAF Benevolent Fund is the RAF’s leading welfare charity, providing a range of services for serving and former RAF personnel, their partners, and families. The charity spends around £18 million supporting just more than 60,000 members of the RAF family.

Joyce said: "I’m wishing Jim the best of luck with his marathon.  He's picked a very worthwhile charity and I hope manages to raise a good amount."
